Travel Diary:Netherlands II- Amsterdam

Windmill-The landmark of Netherlands

The tulips

Clogs

Rembrandt's art gallery

Found this funny poster on the street

Burger vending machine

Sex Museum

A postcard scene

Night view- the water way

Nice Chinese near the red light district

"Window shopping"

This will be my last post on my backpacking in Europe. It took me 1 year to finish it but its really fun to look back the pictures and it keep remind me of the nice experiences.

Amsterdam--my last stop in Europe, besides the image of clogs and windmills, this is the only place where you can find legal marijuana and prostitution. I hate the smell of marijuana whenever I pass a coffee shop. However the fluorescent bikini girls in neon lighted compartment has help it keeps the rate of sex crime low. This city is special and you should come and explore it yourself if you have a chance.

Travel Diary:Netherlands I - Rotterdam

Pencil in the city??

Who dare to live in these cube??

Is not a factory...just a normal apartment!!

Street lights

Rotterdam is really an artistic city with its modern and unique architecture. But according to the people who live in the "cube", really face a problem in getting suitable furnitures, and they have to be superb creative to fully use the space there.

Travel Diary:Belgium-Luxembourg

Was too busy to write a long post and it was almost one year since my travel to Europe. So i decide to make it short and let the photos tell the story themselves.

Luxembourg -a small country in Europe but the richest, has the highest GDP among EU country. We only spent half a day there without counting the time we spent on train. Was a very short trip that we could not really learn about the country in details, but the scenery was perfect and indeed a wonderful memory. The best thing of traveling by train...nice fields

The station..I like the painting on the ceiling

Luxembourg flag is flying

A bus was passing through the high bridge

A perfect view from high ground

Church at the river side

Cannon guarding the city in the fortress, an underground tunnel

A compass view from Luxembourg

Was celebrating my housemate's birthday last monday. We cook togather and prepaired a simple but nice birthday party for her. Birthday's cake is a must. I like this one so much, the base is chiffon cake covered with fresh cream. The cream was just nice, not too much. What i like the most is the fruit's topping. Fruit's cake in autunm is the best, that's what my friend told me, and i think he was right about it. Posted by Picasa

Travel Diary:Belgium-Brussels

Town Hall

Stall selling painting at the Grand Palace

Grand Palace at night

It was a cool winter, without the annual ommegang (an historical procession at the beginning of July) and the biennial flower carpet , the Gand Palace in Brussels still appeared to be very impressive where the town square's sky line is dominated by Guild House, Town Hall and the King's house. As it is used to be described as "One of the most beatiful town squares in Europe, if not in the world", I'm sure it is worth visiting just to wander around and admire the beautiful building.

The restaurant street

The fresh mussels and oysters

Main course--Mussels!!

There is a street not far from the grand palace where seafood restaurants line up. It was pretty hard for three of us to make up our mind when all of them gave out the same offer, a cup of free wine, nice dining atmosphere next to the fire place. Finally we ended up dining in one of them. Connot tell whether we were making the right choice but that was really a nice dinner for us, enjoying the fresh and delicious mussels with belgian wine after a long journey.

The peeing boy

The girl version

Manneken Pis-The world famous peeing boy. According to the guide book there is a female version. However when we found it, it was abandoned, locked up in a cage. I could hardly have a snap on it through the gap.

Bound into these comic wall's painting when we wandering across the street. Actually they have a few cartoon character in painting or statue hidden in the town and you can follow a certain route to discover all of them.We din't try our luck but this is a pretty good idea in promoting tourism, isn't it?

Th Atomium

The Atomium-Built for the 1985 Brussels World's Fair (EXPO'58), the 103metre tall atomium monument represents a unit cellof an iron crystal, magnified 165 billion times. Another fascinating buiding besides Eiffel Tower cames from EXPO. Didn't have a chance to get inside because it still under rennovation for new oppening early this year.

A Belgian fruits' beer with Belgian chocolate is the best dessert we had before we fall into our dream land. The photo was taken with two dolls we bought as souvenier in Versailles.

The World Is Flat

Hardly i can find a time to read a book with the packed schedule in university.Anyway i had a good time reading this book--The World is Flat, while i spent my summer vacation back in Malaysia.

What is globalization? What should we do in order to suit ourselves to this changes?
National Bestseller--"The World Is Flat" by Thomas L.Friedman,New York Times columnist offers us insights on how the world become flat, how should we cope with the flat world, how we take advantage of it and survive from the flat world.

The book offers 10 forces that flattend the world

1.The fall of the Berlin wall on 11/9/89 which tipped the balance of the world and capitalism is the winner between two economic system-capitalism and communism.Since then free market capitalism is the key to economic success even for communist country like China.

About the same period, the invention of IBM PCs and windows operating system had greatly enhanced personal information gathering and personal empowerment.Internet and e-mail created the basic platform that started the global information revolution.

2.8/9/95 When Netscape Went Public--The first web browser which could retrieve documents or web pages stored on internet and display them on any computer screen. The browser had make the internet accessible to everyone, making the computer and its connectivity inherently more useful for millions of people.

3.Work flow software--which enabled digital data to be exchanged between diverse software programs so that they could be shaped, designed, manipulated, edited, reedited, stored, published, and transported without any regard to where people are phisically sitting or which computing devices they are connecting through. This created the virtual environment where task can be distributed to the best guys all around the world and reassembling all the pieces back together.

4.Open-sourcing, Self-Organizing Collaborative Communities--it involves thousands of people around the world to collaborate in writing their own software.Open source software is shared, consistantly improved by its users, and made available for free to anyone.

5.Outsourcing
taking some specific, but limited function that your company was doing in-house-such as research, call center, or accounts receivable- and having another company perform that exact same function for you and then reintegrating their work back into your overall operation.
Example:
General Electric:India is a developing country with a developed intellectual capability. We spend a lot of money doing software, couldn't we do some work of our IT deparment here?

HealthScribe India, a company set up in Bangalore to do outsourced medical transcription for American doctor.

Outsourcing from America to India, a new form of collaboration exploded.

6.Offshoring
when a company takes one of its factories that it is in Canton, Ohio, and moves the wholw factory offshore to Conton, China. There it produces the very same product in the very same way, only with cheaper labor, lower taxes, subsidized energy, and lower health-care costs.

7.Supply-Chaining
Supply-chaining is a method of colaborating horizontally-among suppliiers, retailers, and customers-to create value. The more these supply-chain grow and proliferate, the more they force the adoption of common standards between companies, the more they eliminate points of friction at borders, the more the efficiencies of one company get adopted by the others, and the more they encourage blobal collaboration.

8.Insourcing
UPS was not just delivering packages anymore;it was synchronizing global supply chains for companies large and small.
Example:To comeover customer complains about repair process for broken mechines took too long.Toshiba and UPS come up with this solution.Cutting out the middle steps that include picking up machine from customers, bringing to UPS's hub, then flying it to Toshiba repair facility and then fly it back again to UPS's hub and to the customer house, Now UPS will pick the machines and repair it theirselve with certified repairman of Toshiba, then send it back to the customer.
Big company didn't want to manage the complex global supply chain on their own and this give the opportunities for this new form of collaboration.

9.In-Forming--Google, Yahoo!,MSN Web search
in-forming is the individual's personal analog to open-sourcing, out sourcing, insourcing, supply-chaining, and offshoring.in-forming is the ability to build and deploy your own personal supply-chain--a supply chain of information, knowledge, and entertainment.in-forming is about self-collaboration-becoming your own self-directed and self-empowered researcher, editor.In-forming is searching for knowledge. It is about seeking like-minded people and communities.

10.The steroids--Digital,mobile personal and virtual
The more people have the ability to push and pull information anywhere to anywhere faster, the more barriers to competition and communication dissapear.Wireless technology making this posible.

Travel Diary: Paris II

Paris is a romantic city. This was the image planted in my mind about Paris. The expectation is so high but it turned out to be a disappoinment. I cannot denied that Paris is worth visiting afterall with the artistic atmosphere surrounding the whole city. However it just cannot match the fame of a romantic city. The street is dirty, people are not that polite, the underground is dark and smelly.

Putting aside the dark side, i still had a wonderful moment visiting every piece of art works in the city.Basilica which dominated Montmartre with Romano-byzantine style and Notre Dame with French Gothic architecture, two chathedral with totally different style and architecture stood vividly in my mind.
Basilica

Notre Dame

i cannot forget the shivering night waiting for the the Eiffel Tower to light up just for a snap and the disappoinment of unable to climb up the tower.

And is a wonderful experience exploring the Louvre Museum where the famous Monna Lisa smile is kept here. And here is the place where the best seller "Da Vinci Code" took place.

Letting Go

Come across this short passage from Oon Yeoh's blog, an article titled "Merdeka for Chief".

This is a word from Ajahn Brahm:

Living meaningfully is a training in letting go. You let go of some of your wealth to perform charity. You let go of gross behaviour to keep precepts. You let go of concern for yourself to practise compassion. And you let go of desires to practise meditation. The Dharma is a complete training course in letting go.

有意义的生活是学会放手。
放弃少许的财富进行慈善,学会施舍。
摒弃暴戾,以德服人。
抛弃自私的心态,学习关怀别人。
放弃欲望,进行修炼。

朋友,你准备放手了吗?

Travel Diary: Paris I

Chateau de Versailles: the most glorious palace in Europe. I was really impressed by its architecture with oil-paints covering all the chambers' ceiling. Without any knowledge about European history, i wandered around reading every pieces of explanation, imagined about Louis XIV, who owned this palace centuries ago.
The Palace

The Hall of Mirrors

Sculpture

The garden inside Versailles is another wonder. The largest formal garden ever created with its unique design ans extensive fountains and canals.
